What is the cause of back pain?

The human back consists of several interconnected regions, each susceptible to its own set of discomforts and ailments. Understanding these various regions is essential for effectively addressing back pain.

Back pain is a common ailment arising from various factors. Lifestyle may play a significant role and include obesity, prolonged periods of sitting, strenuous exercise, sports activities, or a lack of proper exercise and stretching. Occupational hazards that involve excessive lifting, pushing, or twisting can contribute to severe or debilitating back pain.

Upper back/neck pain

Starting with the upper back/neck, often referred to as the cervical spine, it encompasses 7 spinal vertebrae, denoted as C1 to C7, along with the associated muscles and ligaments. In the neck/upper  back, damage or irritation to these structures can result in discomfort.

Mid-back pain

Mid-back pain, in particular, can be caused by various factors such as poor posture, muscle strain, or an underlying medical condition. It's essential to address mid-back pain promptly, as the discomfort interferes with your daily activities and overall quality of life.
Your thoracic spine, or mid-back, includes 12 spinal vertebrae, T1 to T12 along with muscles and ligaments.

Lower back pain

The lumbar spine is located in the lower back consisting of five vertebrae, known as L1 to L5. They are larger, thicker and more block-like bones than other spine vertebrae providing the main support system for the weight of your body. When you walk, run, sit, lift or move your body in any direction all of the muscles and ligaments attached to the thoracic and lumbar spine are activated. Damage or irritation to any of these muscles and ligaments can lead to pain, which may affect one side more than the other.

Types of back pain

Pain stemming from the muscles or soft tissues can manifest as sharp pain, throbbing, or spasms, while nerve-related problems may result in burning sensations, shooting pain, tingling, or numbness. Age-related factors can also lead to back pain, as the connective tissues supporting the bones may become stiff and more susceptible to injury over time.
