What are the most common hand conditions?

There are three major types of bones in the hand; Phalanges bones found in the fingers and also in the toes, Metacarpal bones make up the middle part of the hand and Carpal bones create the wrist and connect two bones in the arm called the ulnar bone and the radius bone. All of these complex bones, muscles and ligaments allow for movement and dexterity of the hand.

Understanding Hand Pain

Hand conditions may be congenital (present at birth), a work related injury or overuse caused by repetitive activity and aging. Hand pain that is not a result of an injury is most commonly caused by joint inflammation also known as arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are two of the most common types of arthritis affecting the hand. However, other conditions such as diabetes can cause damage to the nerves in the hand resulting in pain, numbness or tingling of the arms and legs.
